Community and Membership Outreach
Through a wide variety of activities and projects, LWA works to promote conservation and environmental protection throughout the entire Loyalhanna Creek Watershed. In addition, LWA constantly looks to engage community members in all of these projects.
The last Saturday in May is the time to join us for the annual Loyalhanna Sojourn – a nine mile paddle of the Loyalhanna Creek from Latrobe to New Alexandria. LWA and partners are pleased to organize the Sojourn each year to celebrate all the creek and our community has to offer. Visit the “Events” page for more details on this great trip!
Loyalhanna Creek Water Trail
The Loyalhanna Creek Water Trail is sponsored by LWA and provides a low-impact use and promotes stewardship of nearly 36 miles of the Loyalhanna Creek from Ligonier to Saltsburg. This official Pennsylvania Water Trail offers a surprising variety of paddling experiences including whitewater and moving flatwater through scenic ravines and the Loyalhanna Gorge through Chestnut Ridge, as well as still water on the Loyalhanna Lake with open views of birds and other wildlife. Download map & guide.
In the spring, LWA coordinates clean-up efforts of roadsides throughout our communities. Each year over 70 miles of roadways are cleared of litter and other debris by volunteers from local businesses, clubs, organizations and individual community members interested in preserving the beauty of the area. Annual events include the Latrobe Corridor Cleanup and Great Ligonier Valley Cleanup.
LWA In Your Community
LWA staff members have the ability to share great activities and information with you! If you are looking for a special speaker for your students, club, youth group or scout troop, please contact us. LWA will bring programs about watersheds, wetlands or water ecology directly to you, as scheduling permits.
Eagle Scout Projects
LWA welcomes the opportunity to work with Eagle Scout candidates who have contributed to more than a dozen beneficial projects in our community over the years. Contact us to discuss your ideas and learn what options are available.
Each quarter, LWA publishes an informational newsletter with project updates, educational articles and highlights important environmental topics. The newsletters are mailed out to all LWA members, and are available in the office.
Beginning in 2016, LWA will be publishing an annual report of the organization’s yearly accomplishments. The reports can be downloaded from the links below, or if you would like to receive a hard copy, please contact the LWA office.
Ligonier Country Market
LWA is proud to be affiliated with the renowned Ligonier Country Market, open Saturday mornings from mid-May through the first weekend in October. Located at the base of the Watershed Farm in western Ligonier, over 100 vendors offer everything from fresh produce and eggs to specialty handmade crafts and hot cooked foods.
